Architecture competition by NeverEnoughArchitecture
Group members: Alberto Rodriguez, Angeles Bueso
The municipality of the town of Pelayos de la Presa, located southwest of the Community of Madrid, held a competition for architecture ideas to rehabilitate an old monastery in ruins and spark new life into it.
The program includes several uses: an exhibition hall, theater, market place and community spaces.
To the right are images of the ruin's current conditions. Below is the intervention proposed by our group.
Proposed Intervention:
Our group's proposal chooses to embrace the monastery's status as ruins and creates an architectural dialogue with them through the implementation of various metals. The ruin's facade and roofing is done with a copper finish, allowing the new integration to degrade and rust overtime along with the ruins it shields within. In juxtaposition, the interior of the ruins is cladded in gold leaf, a material that speaks to the ancient divinity of the monastery and is quite resistant to corrosion, speaking to how, although the ruins might degrade, their importance remains a testament to time.
