Caritas is an international charity organization within the Christian church that serves to promote, grow, and organize charity events within the church. Every year Caritas holds a raffle in Pamplona to recollect funds to help the less fortunate.
In 2018 Caritas announced a competition for the development of a new structure to house said raffle. Two main economic concerns were presented at this time. Due to Caritas being a non-profit organization, any cost that went into the storage and assembly of this new structure would mean less funds would be available for charity. Due to these concerns, the design of this structure aimed to be as compact as possible with a very easy assembly/ disassembly process that would not cut into the profits generated by the raffle. The design also sought to give a new sleek and modern look to the raffle that would promote more traffic.
The proposed structure is composed of a modular “ribcage” system of C-shaped steel beams that can later be expanded and folded similarly to an accordion. The entire structure is designed to fit in a single truck bed allowing the entire unit to be delivered in a single trip as well as later be stored in a small storage space when not in use. Once the structure has been transported to the raffle´s location, it is deployed and expanded. The interior roofing and flooring of the unit is already pre-built into the structure, and said components fall into place once the structure is fully expanded. Lastly, the exterior roofing and back wall is then covered by a foldable surface formed from Z-shaped steel sheets that are anchored to the front and back of each C-shaped modular steel beam. Below is a diagram showing the entire deployment process.
